Description
A vintage German movie poster of ''The Guns of Navarone'', a classic war film released in 1961, directed by J. Lee Thompson and based on the novel of the same name by Alistair MacLean. The movie is set during World War II and is known for its thrilling action sequences and a strong ensemble cast.
The plot revolves around a group of Allied commandos who are assigned the dangerous mission of destroying two massive German artillery guns located on the fictional Greek island of Navarone. These guns are strategically positioned on a cliff, making them a formidable threat to Allied ships in the Aegean Sea. If the guns remain operational, they could prevent the rescue of a group of British soldiers trapped on a nearby island.
The film's central characters include:
Captain Keith Mallory (played by Gregory Peck): A British mountaineer and expert in explosives who leads the mission. He is a determined and resourceful leader.
Major Roy Franklin (played by Anthony Quayle): A British officer who is second in command and responsible for planning the mission.
Colonel Andrea Stavrou (played by Anthony Quinn): A Greek resistance fighter who joins the team. He is skilled in guerrilla warfare and is familiar with the local terrain.
Corporal Miller (played by David Niven): An explosives expert and a skilled comedian who adds some humor to the otherwise tense situation.
As the commando team makes their way to Navarone, they encounter various obstacles, including enemy patrols, treacherous terrain, and betrayals. The film builds tension as they attempt to complete their mission while dealing with personal conflicts and challenges along the way.
"The Guns of Navarone" is known for its impressive action sequences, including a daring climb up the cliff to reach the guns, as well as intense moments of suspense and drama. The film explores themes of heroism, sacrifice, and the importance of teamwork in the face of overwhelming odds.
The movie was a critical and commercial success upon its release, receiving several Academy Award nominations and winning an Oscar for Best Special Effects. It remains a beloved classic in the genre of World War II films and is often praised for its engaging storyline, strong performances, and memorable set pieces.
About the poster artist:
Rolf Goetze was a German illustrator and painter who painted film poster art for about 30 years. His early works began in the 1930s, when he did a number of posters for Greta Garbo films, including "Queen Christina" (1934), "Anna Karenina" (1935), and "Camille" (1936). He continued creating German poster artwork of mostly American films through the 1960s.
From a stylistic point of view, Goetze's posters are characterized by a great compositional structure; the German designer was capable of blending incredibly realistic, close-up portraits, with elaborate scenes in the background. An undisputed master of portraiture, Goetze created numerous posters using monochrome, black and white, or sepia palettes. His posters look like realistic, vivid charcoal drawings. They are able to represent faces and expressions of their protagonists, as mirrors faithful to reality.
