Description
Marie P-51 Mustang Print
Lt. Louis W. Lee
Stationed at Raydon, Suffolk, England, Lt. Lee became an ace, scoring a total of 5 victories. Lt. Louis W. Lee arrived after the 350th FS, 353rd FG unit had already transitioned from the heavier P-47 Thunderbolt over to the longer-range P-51D Mustang escorts, but very quickly became an ace. Like most of his comrades, Lt. Lee trained extensively in P-40 Warhawks before his assignment in Raydon, England. His Mustang, Marie P-51 44-14690 LH-Q_ was named after his wife back home in the states. Towards the end of the war, Lt. Lee was able to assemble an impressive array of captured Luftwaffe warbirds including the Smithsonian Institute's Messerschmitt Me-163 Comet prior to it being shipped back to the states for testing and evaluation. Very few published photographs exist of P-51D "Marie", however Lt. Lee's family archives were most helpful in reconstructing this profile illustration.
