Description
FW-190 D-9 Red 13 Print
Hptm. Klaus Faber, Luftwaffe
In order to protect the vulnerable Messerschmitt Me-262 during takeoffs and landings, General Adolf Galland set to create an airfield protection squadron (Platzschutzstaffel) to provide necessary cover protection. The JV44 defense group was established and leveraged the FW 190 D-9 (Dora) - the long nosed variant of the mainstay "Butcher Bird". These high-performance interceptors from JV44 were painted with red undersides and white stripes in order to assist friendly anti-air defense from mistaken identity. Legend is such that Faber was on a flight to pick up a case of whiskey when he achieved his final victory. The scripted markings below the canopy state, "Rein mu er und wenn wir beide weinen!" (In he goes and then we both cry!).
