The beautiful state of Florida has been through a devastating hurricane and so much has been lost. We spent a year in Florida riding out some of the worst of the COVID lockdown. We spent weeks distancing and exploring all of the natural beauty that Florida has to offer. Beautiful nature preserves everywhere, we visited most in the state and some many times. And the beaches, wow!
Florida will recover, they have been through this before a time or two or three or four.......But for now, it's going to take quite some time to recover. So post only picture of Florida, tell us where it is. Include your memories if you want. Not just nature, but beaches, business, homes, activities, etc. Let's see what you have got.
Post just 2 a day. I know we have many Floridians here and they could have 1000s of images :}

Watching the wildlife was hands down out favorite thing to do in Florida and nesting season was awesome! Watching these giant wood storks caring for there young chicks was incredible. From nest building to the fledglings leaving the nest, beautiful.

@ Bradford, it's a good thing they decided to take it back to the garage instead of leaving it on the launch pad.

Going out to help my older neighbors clean up debris from hurricane Ian, it brought to mind the many Florida storms we've been through.
The thing that stands out is how our neighbors come together to help each other, every time.
I will never forget how, years ago, when I was a newbie in Florida, the old timers helped me face my first hurricane.
The original Juno Pier built in 1950 was destroyed in a storm and a new pier, bigger and stronger, was built in 1999.
A testament to how we rebuild.

"Osprey Watchers" by Patti Deters. An Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) family watches and waits for dinner to be delivered. Photographed in the Florida Everglades National Park. Please enjoy more of my (birds, outdoors, wildlife, travel) images at patti-deters.pixels.com.
I could re-title this "Waiting and watching for Ian"

"Miami Marina Maze" by Patti Deters. This photographed was taken from aboard a cruise ship in the Miami harbor near Tampa Bay. The height of the cruise ship gives a unique perspective to the many boats parked in the slips in this marina in this vertical crop scene. I also really like the teal green color of the water. Please enjoy more of my (landscape, transportation, travel) images at patti-deters.pixels.com.

Surfside on Amelia Island in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
We had breakfast every morning in the upstairs of this restaurant, on a balcony facing the ocean. We ate as the sun came up then walked the beach for about an hour before starting our day.
This restaurant and beach side bar is popular with tourists and locals alike. There are two stories of inside dining and outside dining on the second floor of the restaurant and around the bar at ground level between the building and the beach.
Live music at the bar is enjoyed in the evenings from sunset until late in the evening.

I've had many a pleasant experience, in Florida, doing shows all around the state.
Here are 3 in those early days, peddling my vulture art.

It such a beautiful part of the planet. Beautiful photography shows the eyewitness to what we are referring to.
But always have a question what causes these devastating hurricane over and over again in particular way in a particular are in the planet.

Was sad to discover the extent of damage to Sanibel and Captiva islands- my family and I have taken a few trips out there and have many good memories.
Photo turned into a photo painting - The sea oats sway with the ocean breeze as the Sanibel Island Lighthouse towers above the sandy shore.

Late afternoon in the Everglades at Loxahatchee National Park and
Wildlife Refuge in South Florida. The pink Roseatte Spoonbills stand out among the trees and branches. Dappled sunlight plays on the moss filled waterway while a Great Blue Heron stands along the riverbank. A calm and beautiful day at the Refuge.

Late afternoon at the beach in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The sun was about to set and the orange sky was glowing. The palm trees tinged with orange stood out from the sky and sandy beach. Boats on the shore and distant ocean water added interest to the scene. The sailboats and beach loungers added lots of color and shapes to the scene.

The first time I ever saw a Roseate Spoonbill was during COVID, winter of 2020. I don't think I had ever even seen a picture of one. I was giddy with excitement at my first sighting of about 30 which isn't very common I would find out. So excited I never got to many good shots. I was in love and it was my mission from there on out to find them
.
My next sighting was probably the following Spring on the now isolated and hurricane torn Sanibel Island at the Ding Darling Nature Preserve. They are there but sightings not real common and the staff at DD said they hadn't been seen in weeks. Walking down a road next to a heavily vegetated canal I caught a glimpse of pink through the bushes. There they were, a group of about 5 standing in the morning sun in the shallow water. I had to stand on a steep, slippery slope on my tippy toes in flip flops just to get a glimpse of them. Jewel was maybe a teenager as you can tell by her somewhat feathered head. She was standing gracefully scooping up water in her oddly shaped flat spoonbill.

I took this photo in Fort Myers right after Tropical Storm Debby came through in 2012. We were staying in St Pete Beach and Tropical Storm Debby decided to stick around for days in the gulf through all but one day of our vacation. We watched a funnel cloud drop down over the ocean as it made its way to St Petersburg and touched down as an EF0 (I of course didn't have my camera handy at the time as it happened fast). On our last full vacation day, we drove down to Fort Myers and Sanibel Island. The rain had finally stopped and the sun peaked through the clouds right at sunset making it just beautiful. My heart breaks for those in Florida.

As dawn breaks upon the shore of Hutchinson Island, FL, three seabirds ride the wind flying past Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge. Gilbert’s Bar House of Refuge was built in 1876 and is the last surviving house of refuge of 10 originally built all along Florida’s coast to aid shipwreck victims. The sandy shore ripples as the ocean waves crash upon the rocky outcrops of craggy limestone. The currents of sea and sky awaken in the morning light.

Palm Tree Triptych: Palm Tree is a watercolor painting in triptych form of palm trees with red tones. The middle panel is a mirrored image. From a photograph taken in Sanibel, Florida. I love the curved shape of the leaves and the soft tones. Florida has twelve species of palm trees. I spent week on Sanibel Island just enjoying nature.

The green of the lilly pads are striking as they float in the river with a beautiful sunset over the Everglades at Loxahatchee National Park in Florida. The tall grasses and reeds poke up among the lilies and can be seen receding across the river to the setting sun. The violet sky reflects in the water against the greens of the lilly pads and the setting sun turns the riverbank in the distance to a blaze of gold and orange.

I took this sunset photo with silhouette of Palm Trees from St Pete Beach Florida during tropical storm Debby. It was one of the roughest days of the storm. I noticed the clouds were starting to slightly break in the evening and the wind calmed down so I grabbed my camera and went out to capture it just as the sun peaked through the clouds briefly. I took this from our hotel.

Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Florida (located on the Sanibel Island, ravaged recently by Cyclone Ian). Scanned from a slide. (ca. 2000).
Yellow-crowned Night Heron versus Blue Crab in a swamp at the Refuge.
The confrontation between the heron and the crab lasted for many, exhilarating, agonizing minutes. Every time the heron tried to grab the crab, the latter fought back valiantly, as in this picture. Eventually, the heron simply gave up and walked away, still hungry! Yay for the crab!
Note: The swamp water is naturally blackish due to tannic acid leaching out of the mangrove tree roots at the Refuge.

Fun and whimsy on the Florida Gulf coast. A row of brightly colored vintage porcelain plates act as a border for this little summer garden in front of a white picket fence. Orange, yellow, red and purple nasturtiums, snapdragons and petunias line the sidewalk with their cheerful colors and fragrant aroma.

The Don Cesar
This is The Don CeSar Beach Resort & Spa painted with watercolor & pen ink in an impressionism style. The famous pink oceanfront landmark has a colorful history.
Located in St. Pete Beach Florida, the "Pink Lady" opened in the 1920s & was a favorite hotel for the rich & famous. The beautiful architecture has arched openings & red clay tile roofs with towers.
In WWII the US Army purchased the hotel for use as a military hospital & later used it as office space.
By 1969 the building had been abandoned, yet area residents opposed the plan to raze the graffiti-covered hotel. It was re-purchased & major renovations were done. It’s now a luxury resort, popular for vacations & special events.
Such a lovely local landmark.

Thistle Lodge Casa Ybel Resort
This watercolor painting captures the Casa Ybel Resort on Sanibel Island, Florida.
Rev. George Barnes built the two-story wood slat home in the late 1800s. His goal was a quiet holiday cottage, but it grew into a 30-room inn, making it one of the first beach resorts on Sanibel.
When his daughter married, he built the newlyweds a beautiful mansion on the inn grounds. The historic home is now the Thistle Lodge Restaurant.

Leaving Miami Seaport and heading out to Sea. Small boats were coming home for the evening and seagulls were hoping for a meal as the ship went through the inlet. People in the tall buildings waved from balconies overlooking the water as the cruise ship passed by. There was a spectacular Florida sunset sky reflecting on the windows, buildings and water.

At the shore in beautiful South Palm Beach, Florida. Pretty blue balloons with nasty stinging tentacles washed up on South Florida's beaches, with the arrival of Portuguese man-of-war season. Lifeguard stands across the region were flying purple sea pest flags, as ocean winds blew these unwelcome visitors toward shore.

This is Fins and Sharky's at the Venice Fishing Pier - we endured a Category 4 with the edge of the eye of hurricane Ian in Venice, Florida, and we are ok!! Fins, Sharky's and the pier are all intact. Downtown intact with some damage. Thousands of trees down in our town. Will take a long time to clean up, but the city is coming together to recover. My house is ok, but we were without power 5 days and internet 7 days. Finally got internet back today and I have missed FAA!

While walking along the stream on a sunny Florida dayI followed the Iguana until I could capture the right pose. I stayed out of sight behind parked cars. He finally turned his head toward me and I took the shot. While following him, I saw the beautiful White Ibis and took some shots. I managed to edit out the cars in the way and put these beautiful creatures together. Iggy and Ibis. A Florida delight

I love to get up early in the morning while visiting the beach to capture the sunrise. While staying in Navarre Beach, Florida one of the mornings I got up early and went to Gulf Island National Seashore between Navarre Beach and Pensacola Beach. It was such a quiet and peaceful morning with no one around. Here's one of those gold hour sunrise photos I captured through some sea oats.

With a lush tropical landscape and pristine oceanfront beach, it's a popular romantic wedding destination.

The beautiful city of Miami is awash in color and bright light. The buildings and reflections can be seen for miles sparkling in the sun. This image is of a glass building made of square windows. Th reflections of the opposite side of the street makes for an interesting abstract design of shapes and colors of buildings and palm trees.
