Description
Mustang Series
Winter Freedom
A section of P51 Mustangs returning to base over the harsh winter landscape of Western Europe. The winter of 1944-45 was one of the hardest on record and many days passed without any flight operations. The group in the image are seen returning from an interdictor sortie and revelling in the low-level operational freedom afforded by the almost complete air superiority at that time.
With that superiority it was realised that there was no real need for the drab cammo schemes seen earlier in the war and the fighter pilots made the most of it in expressing their individual colour paint jobs. The leading P51 is that flown by Don Gentile of the 4th Fighter Group based at Debden.
