Description
I remember sitting out in a grassy field with my paints all around me. My big English Sheppard dog, Mars, was keeping me company as I painted this scene in plein air. This was 50 years ago. It was a warm balmy day in Georgia country side between Augusta and Savannah. The farmer had become used to me exploring his large peanut and pine tree farm. He and his wife gave me permission to paint there when ever I wanted. I frequently took advantage of their offer. Like true southern gentile people, they often brought out some freshly squeezed lemon-aide and chicken salad sandwiches for me. They were so very kind to me, a young military wife visiting from California.
This house used to be occupied by slaves. Their family name was Howard. It was currently being used as a barn. The ground was of red clay. I liked the fact that there were even some pretty blue wild flowers in the foreground.
