Description
Christmas Eve is indeed a busy night, and Santa has lots to do, but the elf wouldn’t be known as jolly if he were chronically stressed out and anxious, trying to get too many projects done within too short of a time – kind of like . . . American business people.
No, Santa takes time for the important things, and in Tea for Two, we see him taking a break with a little girl who is up quite past her bedtime, but it is, after all, Christmas Eve.
The little table is all set up, and the cookies that Santa normally chomps on in solitude are shared with a friend. The topic of their conversation is apparently of great interest to both of them, and Santa and the little girl lean toward one another as they animatedly discuss the important things of life.
Because it is the middle of the night and neither Santa nor the little girl wish to be interrupted by parents, the conversation is kept at a low level, but laughter is one thing that cannot be hidden. When Santa and the little girl laugh – and there will be much laughter in this Tea for Two – the sound echoes merrily through the living room, and the reindeer outside in the snow, patiently waiting for their next stop, hear it and wonder.
And if the parents hear it – well, grown-ups have a tendency to be too adult sometimes, and if they do hear anything, no doubt attribute it to a dream.
Which is what Tea for Two is, in a way – a little girl’s dream of the perfect Christmas Eve, in which she is not scolded for not being in her bed, not placed on a naughty list because she is up and about, but invited to join in the table she set for Santa earlier this evening, and partake in a memorable meal.
