The sun rises over the Hatteras Island dunes on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The Outer Banks are a series of narrow barrier islands running north-south off the east coast of North Carolina. They have been battered by hurricanes and other storms throughout their history and have served as the graveyard for many ships, particularly in the 18th and 19th centuries. This area is part of the protected Cape Hatteras Island National Seashore and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and, with the possible exception of Ocracoke Island to the south, is the most beautiful stretch of beach on the Outer Banks. The dunes in this area were re-formed by two recent hurricanes, and when I went looking for these fences last spring, I could not find them; apparently, they were buried by the storms. It was a reminder that things are constantly changing and you have to take advantage of opportunities as they arise; they may not be there tomorrow. At the same time, be aware that new ones may be available elsewhere.
