Description
Light from the Sombrero Galaxy traveled for 31 million years to reach Earth. What looks like a cloud inside the dark ring of dust and gas is actually 100 billion stars. The big bright stars you see are deceiving; they’re all in the foreground here at home, part of our Milky Way galaxy. To understand the scale, consider that if our galaxy was the size of a dinner plate—and those stars are sprinkled on it—the Sombrero Galaxy would be the size of an Oreo half a mile away and there are no stars in between.
