Artist's Description
This painting is more formally entitled "The Artist's Wife and Isaac" of 1922 by Sir Alfred James Munnings. The artist was known as one of England's finest painters of horses and was an outspoken enemy of Modernism. His fortune was made by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War Memorials Funds which engaged him in several prestigious commissions. He was born in humble surroundings in 1878 Suffolk and served in World War I processing Canadian horses for services in France. He became war artist for the Canadian Cavalry Brigade and at the war's end the Canadian War Records Exhibition contained forty-five of his paintings. In 1944 he was elected president of the Royal Academy of Art and was knighted that year. He died in 1959 at his home at Castle House, Dedham, Essex which his widow turned into a museum of his work.
