Description
A Catahoula Leopard dog waits patiently for his master outside a storefront in Round Top, Texas. The vivid green of this vintage bench accentuates the bright blue of the dog's eyes while the soft cream color of the store's wooden front serves as a peaceful backdrop.
The Catahoula breed has been called the "Swiss Army Knife" of dog breeds--they can do it all. Great pets and watch dogs, they can also herd livestock and sniff out prey. Although classified as a scent hound, they have a sharper edge than the typical scent dog, which is what makes them a great watch dog.
In order to understand the temperament of the Catahoula leopard dog, one must understand its origin and function. The leopard dog is a cur, which means "mongrel" in most English-speaking regions and countries. In the American South, cur actually refers to a type of dog, which is of mixed origins but typically is used for hunting a wide array of prey species and, in some lines, used for a livestock dog. Several breeds or strains of cur exist, including the Mountain cur, which is the "yeller dog" of the South that made famous in Fred Gipson's novel Old Yeller. The exact origins of these breeds often up to debate, but they are a mixture of various strains of dog, including those of the Native Americans as well as terriers, hounds, collies, and mastiffs that accompanied European settlers into the American frontier. It was a harsh life for these dogs, and as a result, certain strains of cur developed a rougher temperament than the other breeds.
I can say this: we've owned a lot of dogs, and our Catahoula has been the best ever dog, hands down.
