Although he generally painted in a commercial and frankly kitsch style aimed at pleasing a wide audience, Austrian painter Moritz Stizer (1857-1905) clearly had hidden depths, as this rather Freudian representation of a young woman awaiting the return of her sailor lover suggests. This is a painting that appears to preempt the work of surrealists like Paul Delvaux and Max Ernst by several decades. A powerful, mysterious and highly erotic work. Shame he didn't do more like this.
