This image is not only in my book "All My Relations, A Payer but preceded the book in the form of a poster. As I began to share the poem that is the book, with others they began to say, Oh my God, that is so beautiful, you should illustrate it into a book." Every time someone said that my eyes would glaze over and I could not imaging turning this simple poem into a book. I approached other illustrators, certain that I was not up to the task and each in turn asked me what images I wanted. I had no clue. Then they would say, "well, go figure out what images you want then come back." So THIS was my research project. I narrowed my search to endangered species, vanishing cultures, and the six major continents. The idea for the mandala came from a North Pole view of the planet I found in an atlas. The illustrations were drawn into a grid of twelve longitudinal lines and corresponding latitude lines. It took a year to finish this piece and was the first completed illustration of the poem as a poster with the poem on the bottom.
