Description
Early May, 1944; Boxted, England. 56th Fighter Group ace Captain Robert S. Johnson warms up his P-47D Thunderbolt, Penrod and Sam, prior to an escort mission. His ground crew stands close by with practiced ears tuned to the idling 2,000 hp Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp radial engine.
Johnson was one of the elite aces in the 8th Air Force, scoring an amazing 27 confirmed aerial victories, plus 3 damaged. His combat awards include the Distinguished Service Cross (now Air Force Cross), Silver Star, eight US Distinguished Flying Crosses (plus one RAF DFC), four Air Medals, and the Purple Heart. Penrod and Sam was Bob Johnson's fourth and last assigned Thunderbolt. He decided to name the P-47 to honor the dedication and skill of his long time crew chief, SSgt. J. C. Penrod. "Sam" comes from Samuel, Johnson's middle name.
