Description
The mural painted by Jackson Pollock for Peggy Guggenheim's townhouse was a commission he received with the freedom to choose the subject and the size, which was to cover an entire wall. The painting was to be completed for a show in November 1943 and was painted in a frenetic burst of energy around New Year's Day of 1944. The painting, named Mural, combined the method of easel painting and an abstract style into the large scale of the traditional mural, redefining the limits of Pollock's abilities and the possibilities of painting. Mural was a turning point for American art and was immediately recognized as such, with art critic Clement Greenberg calling it "great art" and recognizing Pollock as the greatest painter in the country. From this point on, Greenberg was a firm advocate of Pollock's art.
