Tender and transfixing study of a young girl 'dreaming' by Czech-born Austrian painter Gabriel von Max (1840-1915), date unknown. A graduate of the Prague Academy of Arts, Von Max also studied parapyschology (somnambulism, hypnotism, spiritism) and other esoteric subjects, preoccupations that filtered into his work, which often have an oddly dreamlike, otherworldly feel.
