Iptc And Why It Is Important To Use It Before Upload

IPTC
International Press Telecommunications Council
The Information Interchange Model (IIM) is a file structure and set of metadata attributes that can be applied to text, images and other media types. It was developed in the early 1990s by the International Press Telecommunications Council (IPTC) to expedite the international exchange of news among newspapers and news agencies. SOURCE https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPTC_Information_Interchange_Model

WHY USE IT

There are many reasons why IPTC data is important on your image.

It tells people who you are
What the copyright is on the image
The date created, address and author
Who edited and when
Title, description and numerous keywords for that image

These things are not just for sites you may be selling work on. These details are important for tracking the image to its source.... you.

Along with those most important things, you will find many PODs recognise the IPTC and will then auto-populate many fields for you, thereby saving time and typing

WHAT TO USE

How do you use it..... You need to add it yourself in an editing programme once you have finished all editing.

A few programmes allow you to edit IPTC. Personally I always use Irfanview but others do it also that you may already use to edit images

WHAT DO I DO

Open Irfanview and your image
In the top menu click on Information

Click on IPTC and a new box will open

https://abbie-shores.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/irfanview3.jpg

Fill out all the tabs

Once you have, click on Write and OK (save)

Another reason to use this is it indexes the images on your drives or computers making the search find them easily when you add a keyword contained on the IPTC

I hope this helps

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out

Thank you, Chuck :-)

Ugh, more things to have to deal with. I want an assistant to do all the extra stuff.....I just want to paint :(

Thanks Abbie for the very clear instructions with pictures (a visual learner here)

I metatag most of my images, however the FAA auto-populate is deranged - it always puts the wrong data in the wrong place. But as long as the image has my unique metadata, its fine. I was told: "metadata does not matter for search" and I thought "someday it will, so I'm doing it now". Adobe Bridge is super easy for creating and editing a metadata template.

You are welcome :-)

If you can edit the data, what stops a thief from editing it to their own advantage?

I've been getting better at using it and it always works right with both FAA and Flickr. It's super easy to do in PSE. I love it actually. In PSE, you can export the data and save it on your computer. This helps tremendously if you have multiple images of the same subject. Even not, putting the copyright info and other stuff in there will help save time. Uploads here are a breeze with it. All I need to do is to remember to add a number to the title due to FAA's gremlins.

Very useful, Abbie. I'll have to look into this perhaps!

I bulk edit them in Irfanview if I've done a series. Like my Forest Series. Then add numbers or special keywords as I go

Thanks, Abbie, I never add keywords to my photos. I may do that for licensing purposes but not for upload to POD sites. Anyway that info can be removed. The image can be copied or layered onto a blank file with no metadata at all.

Seriously, I give up trying to help people.
