Description
Pop art illustration of actress Rita Hayworth. Rita Hayworth (1918 – 1987), was an American actress, dancer, and producer. She was famous during the 1940s as a leading star, who eventually appeared in 61 films over 37 years. After she became the most glamorous screen idol of the 1940s, she was called "The Love Goddess" of cinema. The American Film Institute's survey listed her as one of the top 25 female motion picture stars of all time.
Her earliest promising role was in Howard Hawks's "Only Angels Have Wings" (1939), in which she played a philandering wife. By the early 40s, she rapidly developed into a glamorous star through such career landmarks as "Angels Over Broadway" (1940), with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., "Blood and Sand," as a stunning temptress, "You'll Never Get Rich," and "You Were Never Lovelier." In both, she sparkled as Fred Astaire's dancing partner, and "Cover Girl" with Gene Kelly. Astaire said she was his favorite dance partner. She also starred in the Technicolor musical Cover Girl (1944), with Gene Kelly.
The film that more than any other confirmed Rita's position as Hollywood's "Love Goddess" was Gilda (1946), with Glenn Ford, where she played the femme fatale in her first significant role. She had a major role in "Only Angels Have Wings" (1939), "The Lady from Shanghai" (1947), "Pal Joey" (1957), and "Separate Tables" (1958).
After her picture was on the cover of Life magazine, her photo was in high demand as a pinup by American servicemen overseas, and it adorned the atomic bomb that was dropped on Bikini.
