Description
A Great Egret (Ardea alba) searches for a snack before roosting as the sun sets over the Cedar Point Recreation Area of the Croatan Naitional Forest near Cape Carteret & Swansboro, North Carolina. These egrets are widely distributed in North America with four subspecies found in Southern Europe, Africa and Asia. Other names include Great White Egret, Common Egret and White Heron.
The Tideland Trail leads through this recreation area. Wooden bridges along the trail cross the natural wetlands and marshes. Hiking through this area provides veiws of the White Oak River and native woodlands as well as the estuarine environment.
