A veteran of the Western Front, Josef "Pips" Priller joined the Luftwaffe in 1935. During the Battle of Britain, Priller was to become battle-hardened with at least 14 confirmed victories. In 1943, Priller was stationed in Lille, France with JG26 Schlageter and flew FW-190 Black 13 where he would eventually score 101 combat victories across 1307 combat missions. He became famous as one of a few aircraft brave enough to make strafing runs during D-Day on Sword Beach, June 6, 1944.
